Use of function keys

Function keys allow you to do things with your keyboard instead of your mouse to increase your speed.

Microsoft Excel is huge in terms of its underlying features and functions. So are the keyboard shortcuts in it. The list can go on and on. What we will do is limit our scope and concentrate only on function keys today.

We all know the basic moves like how you can around the sheet and select cells using the arrow keys or press Ctrl+A to select the entire worksheet but there are more complicated shortcut keys that you should know.

We will try and learn the action associated with F1 through F12, standalone and in combination with keys like Alt, Ctrl and Shift.

F1 F1 Open help menu
Ctrl + F1 Minimize the ribbon
Alt + F1 Insert Chart
Alt + Shift + F1 Create a new worksheet
F2 F2 Edit the selected cell
Ctrl + F2 Prints the current worksheet
Shift + F2 Allows the user to edit a cell comment
Alt + F2 Save As option
Alt + Shift + F2 Saves the current worksheet
F3 F3 After a name has been created, F3 will paste names
Ctrl + F3 Open Excel Name Manager
Shift + F3 Open the excel formula window
Ctrl + Shift + F3 Creates names by using those of either row or column labels
F4 F4 Repeats last action. For example, if you changed the color of text in another cell, pressing F4 will change the text in cell to the same color
Ctrl + F4 Close the current workbook
Shift + F4 Find Next
Alt + F4 Close the current workbook
F5 F5 Go to a specific cell
Ctrl + F5 Restores window size
Shift + F5 Open find and replace options
F6 F6 Move to the next pane
Ctrl + F6 Switch between open workbooks/windows (Next workbook)
Shift + F6 Move to previous pane
Ctrl + Shift + F6 Switch between open workbooks/windows (Previous workbook)
F7 F7 Spelling check selected text or document
Ctrl + F7 Activate move window cursor provided window is not maximized
Shift + F7 Open research menu
F8 F8 Extend mode
Ctrl + F8 Activate resize window cursor provided window is not maximized
Shift + F8 Add to Selection
Alt + F8 Open the Macro menu
F9 F9 Recalculates every workbook
Ctrl + F9 Minimize current window
Shift + F9 Performs calculate function on active sheet
Ctrl + Alt + F9 Calculate all worksheets in all open workbooks, regardless of whether they have changed since the last calculation
F10 F10 Activate Menu bar
Ctrl + F10 Maximize currently selected window
Shift + F10 Display shortcut menu
Ctrl + Shift + F10 Activate Menu bar
F11 F11 Creates a chart from selected data.
Ctrl + F11 Create a new Macro sheet
Shift + F11 Create a new worksheet
Alt + F11 Open the Visual Basic Editor
F12 F12 Save As option
Ctrl + F12 Open a workbook option
Shift + F12 Save the open workbook
Ctrl + Shift + F12 Prints the current worksheet
