Use of special character keys

Special character keys allow you to do things with your keyboard instead of your mouse to increase your speed.

We all know the basic moves like how you can around the sheet and select cells using the arrow keys or press Ctrl+A to select the entire worksheet but there are more complicated shortcut keys that you should know.

We will try and learn the action associated with special character keys, standalone and in combination with keys like Alt and Ctrl.


Excel Shortcut To do this
Ctrl + + Inserts a new cell, column or row
Ctrl + - Deletes the selected column or row
Ctrl + ' Copies a formula of above cell into current cell
Ctrl + [ Selects all cells referenced by formulas in the highlighted section
Ctrl + ] Selects cells that contain formulas that reference the active cell
Ctrl + / Selects the array containing the active cell
Ctrl + \ Selects the cells that have a static value or don’t match the formula in the active cell
Ctrl + ~ Show all formula in Excel
Ctrl + ; Enter the current date
Ctrl + Shift + ; Enter the current time
Alt + = Create formula to sum all of above cells
Alt + ' Allows formatting on a dialog box
Ctrl + Shift + ' Copies value of above cell into current cell
Ctrl + Shift + " Copy the value from the above cell
Ctrl + Shift + { Selects all cells directly or indirectly referenced by formulas in the highlighted section
Ctrl + Shift + } Selects cells which contain formulas that directly or indirectly reference the active cell
Ctrl + Shift + \ Selects the cells within a column that don’t match the formula or static value in the active cell
Ctrl + Shift + & Place outline border around selected cells/area
Ctrl + Shift + * Selects the current region around the active cell
Ctrl + shift + - Remove outline border
Ctrl + Shift + = Inserts a new cell, column or row
Ctrl + Shift + ) Unhide columns
Ctrl + Shift + ( Unhide rows
Ctrl + Shift + ! Applies comma formatting
Ctrl + Shift + $ Applies currency formatting
Ctrl + Shift + # Applies date formatting
Ctrl + Shift + ~ Applies General formatting
Ctrl + Shift + % Applies percentage formatting
Ctrl + Shift + ^ Applies scientific formatting
Ctrl + Shift + @ Applies time formatting
